oday in the present era of developing surroundings with a lot of twinkling stars of dimmed lighting, presenting the Chaos and confusions in the young minds, it was really great to read the most influential Islamic scholar of the 20th century. The man with the spirit of true vision. The leader with the qualities of Islamic scriptures, the commentator of the divine book with such an amazing way of propagation. The man whose whole life was burning around the bright flame of Islamic values. Maulana Maududi (R.A) a great author of various eye opening translations of divine book and other amazed books. Maulana (1903-1979) born on 25th of September 1903 at Aurangabad, a revolutionary man who devoted his whole life to the upliftment of Muslim communities and for the domination of Islam. When there was the time of criticism and Islamic blurred picture was being presented to the world. He was the one among the brightest stars of the glorious past of Islam who clarified every confusion and let people ponder through his writings. Maulana is the author of more than 100 Best seller books of the world, Same from his collection of his revolutionary shelf it is pleasure to review his book Islami Nizam-e-Taleem (Urdu) published by Markazi Maktaba Islami Publishers New Delhi. This book is the answer to the confusions which the Muslim students at present are facing in their respective educational institutions.
The Book is less in pages but the vision which it possesses is a gift in its own. Maulana Maududi has written this book to confront the educational system and produce the way out to go for the best system of education. The Book comprises various topics which describes the steps of that very educational system which the world, especially Muslims have to follow to fulfill the void which has been created due to the west. Maulana starts the discussion by reassuring the reader about a past system of education that was wholly based on the suggestions to the Islamic rulers. He cleared the confusions that this system of education was not ours, it was only confined to the governmental system and it ended with the dominance of the west because there was no place in the new West governmental setup for those who were being educated with this system. But the majority of religious people were to defend it as it reflects the glorious culture of past even it was not satisfactory enough, so that own Muslim identity can be protected under the influence of western government. But with the passage of time a lot of challenges came into being, and there was not any satisfactory outcome from this educational system rather than the preachers and Madrasa teachers who can hardly look after the mosques and Schools but can’t face the modern challenge and can only make sure their presence to the society with the least important issues which they were discussing. But despite of this little advantage of culture, it’s negative impact was much more to been seen on the image of Islam. The true spirit remained unexplored due to these kinds of so called islamic preachers they ignited the issues and let this flame to burn for their own bread. This was the whole civil service system. Many of us still believe this system as our glory but it is empty inside with the real spirit, it is dry and incomplete to tackle with the present situation.
Maulana Maududi first distinguished the old and new system of education to make readers balance them and make a way out. Now Maulana describes the New system of education which has been established by the west. The author tries to ask the self answered question that every nation tries to implement that very system of education which can produce the desired product for the prosperity and the betterment of the nation, and same case happened with us that the west was all trying to make us the way and bait here in Asia to implement their system by nourishing us with their culture and education, familiarize us with their language because without that it was impossible for them to dominate the Asia. Their aim was not to make us leaders who can lead but the successive authority who can make their ways easy to interact with and to lead on. So this system was on the other side of Islamic values, as in the Europe the rise of educational system was by the hands of Atheists, non believers of God, so how can it was possible by this education system here that it will be in favor of our old glorious past and Islam. The educational system is still in the same way as they introduced it here and those who are being nourished by this system can never be the believers of God and can’t reflect the spirit of Islam in their own as the system is all dry with that value. But the question remains as we can see the western countries are well cultured and developed one why we people are far from that even studying the same book and chapter? The answer is countries by their own making the steps for the countrymen for the bright future and we were not Europe’s own people we were just meant to be such foolish who can destroy their own country for others and we presented the same. So it is still impossible to be such well cultured people without being familiar with the true spirit of Islam.
Maulana discussed the Women educational system also in this book to mark its importance. The educational syllabus should be the same for the women and we should try to educate them the same as men to get the future generation of good manner, true spirit as Women is the first educational institution of the ward. We should try to make our women trained well and self defensive so that at any situation they can defend their modesty as Muslim history has witnessed. Our system of education is different than that of west in providing rights of women, as western culture make women to appear pseudo man by look and decreased her modesty but rather than that Islam in the veil of gender provides all rights to women which she needs. The educational system should try to make a separate way of teaching for women and should refrain from co-education as much as it can, because without doing so our desired product can’t be produced.
Maulana emphasizes on the Revolutionary step to be taken at all stages of this educational journey. He insists that the basic Islamic values should be taught to the children at kindergarten level so that when they will upgrade to the higher classes they will ponder on what they have been taught. Maulana said it will be foolish step to think that we have to eliminate both old and new educational system for better one, it is all wrong. But rather than that we have establish such a new system from these both which will eliminate the flaws of both of these systems and can fulfil the current challenges and requirements of the modern societies. There should be in mind that what kind of system we need for independent country.
First of all we have to make it clear to the students what actually is the aim of education? Because without that the nectar of knowledge can’t be tasted. Our educational syllabus should insist Muslim students to think about the creational plan of God, and should produce the thirst of being successive authority of almighty Allah. There is no doubt that without modern education Muslim society will be marginalized but also without Islamic knowledge we can’t Prosper. We can only produce the corrupted clerks which the west wants. We can get the people who are insane by their actions. We can’t handle and govern the people without the justice which is only hidden in the divine book of Islam. Our motive of education should be to get closer to the creator. We should get the hard grip of certain life after death. Our educational system should provide the protectors of women, not those who can imbalance the society by their deeds. Maulana at last discusses the phobia of English language that language is just the communication to transform the thoughts with each other, so try to educate people in the local languages as well to protect the culture and make it easier for people to learn well. English is just the language, not the apparatus to check the level of educational degree. But we can’t deny from learning it, our youths should be multidimensional, we should learn it but not to make it a only way of learning.
Finally coming to the crux of the book Maulana provides the sketch of Islamic educational system to be implemented by which Muslim students can get their identity back, The system should make students familiar with Quran, Hadith and the life of prophets and as well as students should be at the top level in modern scientific research. So that western education can be the only way to compete with the modern challenges of the world but the ultimate aim should be attained only by the Quranic way. The scholars who are getting their Research degrees shouldn’t be in the dilemma of being superior without being familiar with the Islamic knowledge as the paper degree can be helpful to you here, not to the day of judgement before almighty Allah.
So our educational system should produce students with both qualities of modern education and islamic values who can can fulfill the responsibilities which has been mentioned in the holy quran and can be beneficial for the society as well as at mass level the true representatives of islam.
