otwithstanding its tall claims over providing basic amenities to the people living in rural areas, several villages in central Kashmir’s Budgam district are deprived of facilities like portable drinking water and electricity.
Inhabitants of Handjan Mamat area of the district have lambasted government for failing to provide uninterrupted electricity supply and drinking water facility in the area.
“We have no choice but to take dinner and Sehri in candlelight, unfortunately the departments concerned have left us distressed,” said Mohd Shafi, resident of Handjan Mamat here.
Talking to Good Morning Kashmir, people of the area said that the area is only five kilometers away from the Budgam headquarters but they are still deprived of facilities like electricity, water supply, and roads. They blamed the local leaders and administration officials and said that whenever these people take their problems to a leader or officer, they are given false assurances. Nothing is achieved.

“Our village is hardly five kilometers far from the district headquarter Budgam but still our village is without basic amenities like electricity supply, and drinking water supply. While as there is no safe drinking water, and with the result there are chances of many diseases, if the problem was not solved at the earliest,” said another villager.
The people said that unscheduled power cuts not only irks the general public, the students who are preparing for different examinations are badly suffering, how can they read, how can they complete their syllabus and they prepare themselves for examination when there is shortage of electricity in our area, locals said.
People say that power cuts in the area is having a bad effect on children’s education.
The people have demanded the Lt Governor’s administration and senior officials of the concerned department to take immediate steps to improve the power, water supply in their area, so that people could not suffer more.
