The Union Health Ministry on Thursday wrote to eight states and UTs, where a significant rise in weekly (Dec 22-28) Covid-19 cases have been reported, to enforce strategies for the containment of infection proactively.

The ministry has urged the health secretaries of Delhi, Haryana, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Karnataka and Jharkhand for increased surveillance, monitoring of emerging hotspots, genome sequencing of Covid-19 positive samples, rapid pace of vaccination and ensure strict adherence of Covid Appropriate Behaviour (CAB), the letters showed.

“It has been seen that there has been an increase in Covid-19 cases and lessening of doubling time of the day infections. The issue needs to be addressed immediately and proactively to ensure neither the infection spreads further nor we reach a situation of increased mortality,” Union Health Secretary Rajesh Bhushan cautioned in the letters written to the concerned states/UTs.

“Hence, you are requested to ensure enhanced testing; proactive contact tracing and isolation of positive cases; setting up containment and buffer zones; increased pace and coverage of Covid-19 vaccination; adherence to CAB and enforcement of strict and appropriate restrictions to counter the spread of infection,” the letter suggested.

The Union Ministry also shared concern over a week-on-week rise of Covid-19 cases in Delhi, Gurgaon, Ahmedabad, Rajkot Surat, Ranchi, Chennai, Kolkata, Thane, Pune, Mumbai, Nagpur and Bengaluru between December 21-28 compared to the previous week.
