Drug addiction means ‘developing the habit of taking intoxicants’. In the materialistic world today, where man is burdened with worries, drug addiction has become a fashion as well as a practice.

People belonging to the upper section of society have turned to drug-taking for saving themselves from the worries they have to face in their day-to-day life. People belonging to the lower section have fallen into the clutches of the anti-social elements and have turned to drug taking.

The practice of drug-taking has let loose the doors to hell. Brown-sugar, opium, hashish, ganja and the like are taking the drug-addicts nearer to death quicker than any other malady.

According to a recent report, more than one and half a million people lose their lives by these drugs every year. The life of a drug-addict becomes a hell. He feels physically wrecked, morally degraded and mentally bankrupt.

He becomes a diseased organ of society. Immediate and effective steps should be taken to root out this evil from the society. Otherwise, a total ruin of society would not be far off.

Kashmir has been through the two decades of turmoil that resulted in an increase of psychiatric illness and psychosocial disturbances. A number of psychiatric problems have emerged like Depression, OCD, PTSD, Drug Addiction, etc. As long as the problem of drug addiction in Kashmir is concerned it has observed that this conflict ridden region has a tremendous rise in substance abusers over the past decade. United Nations Drug Control Programme (UNDCP) reported that around 70000 people are drug addicts in the Kashmir valley alone among which 4000 are females. Several studies conducted in the valley revealed that youth particularly between the age group of 17-30 involved in this menace of drug addiction .

The biggest challenge is the illegal trafficking and sale of drugs within the valley to which police and general have an important role to play. Some recent reports suggest that there is a large number of Opioid cultivation going on in Kashmir that makes it more readily available for consumption and others psychotropic medicines are also easily accessible. With full public support and cooperation, Police can work more efficiently towards this menace but no one actually cares.
We are now in the hub of drugs. Society is full of stoned eyes and the lust of drugs.
If the authorities wouldn’t have promoted the drug mafia here then we don’t have the tolerance here. Somehow everyone is responsible and the kids are going through the survival phase.
