one day National Seminar on “Covid and Communication” was organised by Department of Mass Communication and Journalism, Islamic University of Science and Technology Awantipora on Thursday.
The Seminar was oraganised under the patronage of Prof. Mushtaq Ahmad Siddiqui (VC,IUST).
The coordinator of Seminar was Dr. Monisa Qadiri (Department of Mass Communication and Journalism, IUST) and two guest speakers Prof. Ujjwal Chowdury (Pro Vice Chancellor Adamas University, Kolkata), and Mr. Aditya Chatterjee (Vice President, Adfactors PR, Mumbai).While Dr. Ruheela Hassan (Head of the Department of Mass Communication and Journalism, IUST) and Prof. Abdul Salaam Bhat (Dean of Humanities and Social Science ,IUST).
The welcome note was addressed by Dr. Ruheela Hassan (HOD,DJMC), the purpose is to train new journalists how to empower the true information. She also said that at least 8000 people died around the world because of coronavirus related misinformation. Prof. Abdul Salam highlighted the issue due to Covid lockdown cause depression, unemployement and other things. In India communities were targeted in that pandemic like Muslim Corona, and some says it is a myth.
Prof. Abdul Salaam Bhat highlighted impact of pandemic in economy and Muslims in migrants mostly effected in a pandemic. Disaster management Act, which was supposed to be a tool for protection of peoples’s crises in disaster has often to be a weapon of operation of the poor, because poors are mostly effected duely in disaster.
Mr. Aditya Chatterjee talked about the empathy in communication and not only information will . All forms of business, it is not only making turnover or making money, if you donot have empathy then your communication is hallow. He gave an example of campaign by Stayfree. So many big corporaters and institutes in india, they realised it over the last one year. On the occasion of World Menstrual Hygiene Day, Johnson and Johnson Stayfree unveiled a video that invites families to change the way they approach the period conversation.Nearly two million girls in India would have experienced their first period during the lockdown. Stayfree encourages families to adopt a positive approach towards menstruation to keep her informed and make her feel confident and support in this journey.
Prof. Ujjwal Chowdury threw light on how Covid impact on media and entertainment. In media he talk about low circulation newpapers after pandemic , GST imposed on newspapers. The biggest worry is the job loss, 11000 jobs lost in top twelve newspaper agencies since march 2019 in India. He also said,during Covid, digital led convergence emerged. The face of new journalism is web journalism through mobile journalism or MOJO. NDTV and Aljazeera, both have their reporters reporting only with mobile phones. What happens with cinema due to Covid, Long closure of theatres AMC (US) and Cineworld (Europe); many outlets are closing down; some resumed. Short films OTT realese of features, new life life to independent cinema.
Prof. Mushtaq Amad Siddiqui said ”that the well communicated formation about the Covid Vaccine is going to help the next generation to come back this pandemic”. This the power of of communication will help if world will decide one month, we will observe all the three SOP’s wearing mask , washing the hands with sanitiser and observe the social distance. If we will do it for one month then there will be no viral infection but everybody, everywhere in the world has together that is the power of communication that is to be generated.
