Our society is facing various ills be it drug menace, violence against women, suicides etc. But apart from these there is a new emerging problem of late marriage in Kashmir. Marriage is considered as spiritual tie up rather than a physical bond in our society but are we really up to our mark? A simple no.

A study conducted by department of sociology of university of Kashmir put the percentage of unmarried population at 55 (Numbering almost 9 lacs) in age bracket of (20 -35) Another study shows that in Srinagar alone more than 40,000 girls are unmarried and had already crossed their 40 ‘s . Now what should be the remedy, First and foremost we have to look at the factor of late marriages, be it unemployment or getting a dream job, or financial independency or be it the rituals of our society which are proving a most disastrous burden on low income families. Now second is getting Rid of these factors, this can be done by creating opportunities for jobs, aware people about useless spending so unnecessary rituals can be avoided.

PROS AND CONS OF MARRYING LATE

Marrying late gives a person enough time to find a good job and particularly women are preferring marrying late for financial independency but there are concerns about it also. Firstly women biological clock can be disturbed and her ability of conception can be diminished. Secondly A generation gap may not be good for their children as parents will not be able to take proper care.

Thirdly A study has proved that unmarried people are more prone to mental health and mood swings. Fourthly Sexual health for both men and women shows a downward trend after 30 years of age. Apart from this a recent study has shown that if a woman has conceived a child before her 30’s she is less prone to breast cancer.

CONCLUSION

Marrying early has its own benefits but these societal evils are proving to be a deterrent wall of a achieving this . So if we want to end this menace we have to work on ground level to make marriages of Kashmir simple so that everyone can afford to be in spiritual tie up. And Also community level intervention should be encouraged be it religious or social . And recent announcement of government of India of increasing age of women from 18 to 21 should be reconsidered so to uphold the essence of liberty .
