England allrounder Moeen Ali is self-isolating for 10 days after testing positive for the coronavirus, the national team said on Monday, a day after the squad arrived in Sri Lanka for a two-Test tour.
The positive result came from a PCR test conducted on Sunday (January 3) at Hambantota airport. In accordance with Sri Lanka’s government guidelines, Moeen will have to isolate for ten days, until January 13th. As the first Test in Galle begins the following day, it is almost certain that he will be ruled out of that game.

It is not clear at this stage what strain of the virus Ali has. The UK has recently been hit by a new strain which is understood to be up to 70 per-cent more transmissible than the previous version and has seen positive cases running at more than 50,000 a day over much of the last week.
