ovid lockdown has been a testing time for all of us. The spread of Covid-19 across the globe has caused disruptions to everyday life. In the increased downtime, some people have found space to start new projects and other creative endeavours.
One such budding artist is Baseerat Jan. 19-year-old youth hails from Sopore area of north Kashmir’s Baramulla district. From securing a Bachelor’s degree in Science from Jamia Hamdard University, and now being a calligrapher, Baseerat Jan has truly come a long way.
“During pandemic, stuck in solitary has took heavy tool in adults and children on their mental and physical health, to overcome from stress, i started writing verses of Quran on board,” through which my calligraphy had reach a decent level of feedback by nears and dears”, said Baseerat Jan.

Baseerat mainly does Arabic calligraphy. She used to make name, diwani style calligraphy but Arabic calligraphy is her main passion.
“Calligraphy enriches faith, connects me to the Quran. It helps me to strengthen my faith and draws me closer to Allah,” she says.
Relatives and friends deeply admire my art and appreciate it. The feedback of people boosted my confidence to do more hard work, she said.
She said that,” the passion of calligraphy is not for income purpose, it is just to learn and write verses of Holy Quran as it takes me more closer to Allah”, Adding that, to make your parents and society proud, never hide your talent bring it out and work hard and one day your hard work will paid off.
“During the decline of Mughal Rule, gentle calligraphy was on the peak of vanishing.Nowadays, it is growing day by day, my main focus is to revive the art of calligraphy for future”, she added.
Kashmir, which is often referred to as the land of Sufi saints, has always been famous for its rich culture and heritage. According to the Archeological Survey of India, one such art method i.e. calligraphy was introduced to Kashmir by the scholar saint Sharaf-ud-Din Bulbul in the fourteenth century A.D.
