Kashmiris found a much-needed platform for free expression where they are sharing anything, be it their plight or rumors. The advent of social media has revolutionized the whole world. But this newly found freedom is too dangerous here in Kashmir. From last few days rumors on social media have created uncertainty among people, and the reason behind the uncertainty is the recent visit of Lt Governor Manoj Sinha, other police, Civil officials to Delhi, and their meeting with the Home Minister and other top officials. Even the people here in Kashmir can freely find readership for their opinions and ideas. Few years ago, many business start ups of the valley have made it big through social media-a case in point being a food joint owner in Srinagar who expanded his business through social media. However, the publicity quotient entailed in the social network has prompted many people to believe that it can be used to disseminate news as tell.ith the advent of social media,
Rumors like these have been spread numerous times from last few years, and have caused pain or discomfort for common Kashmiris. Stringent laws need to be enacted to prevent fake news from being spread through social media. Slander, character assassination and abuse have to be fended off and need of the hour is to check bulk messages spread through WhatsApp. Day in day out we read news that government is going to do something bigger, a hundred kilogram man lost half of his weight in just a fortnight or how a novice gym-goers were able to lift hundred kilograms in bench-press in just one month into weight lift practice. The other reason for rumor mongering in Kashmir are, the political workers, who use social media to score brownie points without knowing the facts. Every other day we read news which is then retracted. The news triggers an ethnic conflict within hours before we are told it was fake news. We hope that no news is spread without filtration and government evolves with some kind of a gatekeeping on social media as well. In the end, rumors are just simply lies. We may think they are true, but if we have no evidence of that, then it is unfair to the people being told and the thing it’s about.
