A place of worship is normally a place where a sinner usually comes to atone for his sins. However, a lot of times these places also become a scene of the crime. There has been a series of break ins at scores of religious places across the valley. The robbers have not spared any place of any religion-there have been robberies in Gurudwaras, Mosques. And the latest such case is Datageer Sahib’s Shrine in Khanyar.
The police have not been able to solve any robbery case with precision. After the initial bout of investigation the police can soon be seen to move in circles or hit a cul de sac. Like an open and shut case. They rob and then they are never found. Speakers, batteries of inverters, prayers mats and donation boxes are some of the common things which have been stolen from places of worship. The only saving grace is that almost all the robberies have taken place during night so one can say it did not happen during broad daylight.
Kashmir valley in particular has witnessed massive unemployment. Transporters are sitting idle as are the private school teachers. Many people are finding it hard to make two ends meet. Under these circumstances it has been observed worldwide that there is a high propensity for crimes.
While many places of worship are installing CCTV cameras to ensure safety of the premises the law enforcement agencies also need to increase patrolling to ensure that no further break in take place. A robbery at a place of worship has the potential to flare up as a law and order problem. In a place like Kashmir one can not underestimate the fact that the places of worship have the potential to turn into a riot.
We hope the law enforcement agencies take up this matter seriously. All those found guilty must be punished severely to maintain the sanctity of the places of worship.
