Winter in Srinagar has been at its peak this year. On Sunday, Srinagar recorded the coldest night in three decades at minus 8.8 degree Celsius.

As per the MeT department, the minimum temperature dropped to minus 8.8 in Srinagar on Sunday.

“Minus 8.8 is the lowest minimum temperature recorded after exactly 30 years in Srinagar,” said a MeT official. Adding that In 1991 the minimum temperature recorded was minus 11.8 in Srinagar.

The rest of the valley was also reeling under intense cold.

Vast areas of many water bodies including Dal Lake have frozen due to the bone chilling cold. The plunge in the minimum temperature has resulted in freezing of water supply pipes. A thick layer of ice has settled over several roads in the city and elsewhere in the valley, making it difficult for motorists to drive.
