rom the last three years or so there has been a phenomenal increase in the number of teen suicides in the valley. A cocktail of poverty, alienation, and family disputes is leading them to take the ultimate step. Many teens these days get the fatal feeling that they had enough. A good majority among this lot feels solace by the fact that nothing is permanent and try to forget this feeling as soon as it enters their mind. A tiny minority in this gaggle of people is not so lucky. What they think is that life is meaningless and the only way to give meaning to their existence is by ending it. That gave the world the phenomenon of suicides.
Yesterday, the girl who had jumped into river Jhelum near Budshah Kadal, on May 06, was recovered from Jhelum in Panzinara area, what prompted the girl to take such an extreme step is still unknown. Suicides are on the rise and there seems to be very little support from the administration to address the core issues. Suicides are a symptom of a society rife with alienation and injustice. Only a person who is at the cul de sac of such a situation can think of taking such a fatal step. Someone who commits suicide is a chronic thinker. It is years and years of thinking or rather overthinking which leads one to take this ultimate step.
The role of the society is to step in and prevent the person from falling into the abyss of depression, self-loathing and over-thinking. If the wound is let to fester, it spreads its deadly tentacles without warnings and signs till the person reaches a point of no return. The taunts, sarcastic remarks and unwanted gazes of neighbors bear heavily on an impressionable mind. It I here that the neighbors, friends and well wishers have to come in and support the suffering person. The current situation arising out of Covid-19 has wreaked havoc. Many people who earned hand to mouth have nothing to feed their family now. The establishment needs to reach out to them now and not wait till they take an extreme step. We hope things change for good.
