he explosion of fast food restaurants has significantly increased the intake of fried and junk foods. One of the main reasons for fast food’s popularity is the convenience factor because in this fast-paced world we have chosen a sedentary lifestyle and become lethargic. But we must be cognizant of the fact that the effects of fast food go way beyond our waistline. Some nutritionists go to the extent of using the term “Fast Food Genocide” because most of us don’t understand the depth and breadth of the harm as a large segment of our society resorts to these foods. Many a times, we are aware that junk food can contribute to obesity, diabetes, heart attacks, strokes, dementia and cancer, but what we don’t realize is the strong causative role of an unhealthy diet in mental illness. Excess consumption of junk foods changes the chemical composition of your brain.
It almost acts like an addiction and people go through withdrawal symptoms and can lead to depression. It further causes hormonal imbalance in the body leading to wanting more of those junk foods. High intake of sugars and fats tend to suppress the function of the brain that helps in learning and memory formation. This phenomenon is especially observed in growing children when their learning is at its highest. It was further supported by a study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, where it observed junk food consumption led to poor cognitive test results. Results displayed in a sudden inflammation in the hippocampus region of the brain, which is responsible for your memory and recognition. We seem to live in “food deserts,” with reduced availability of fresh fruits and vegetables. It is estimated that 1.7 million (2.8%) of worldwide mortality has been attributed to inadequate consumption of vegetables and fruits .
There can be irreparable effects of junk on person’s health including obesity, insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, various cardiovascular conditions, lethargy, sleepiness, clogging of arteries ,increased headaches and migraine, triggering outbreaks of acne, depression, dental cavities, raising cholesterol levels and bloating. Some fast foods can be healthy, like salad and sushi. Also, the occasional use of junk food won’t hurt much.
