Wednesday marked a day of change for Kashmir. Public parks opened after a gap of so many months. A gaggle of people was seen outside the gates of the major public gardens in Srinagar.
The stall owners mainly consisting of photographers, flower sellers, miniature items were seen flocking in and out of the gardens. The administration had kept proper thermometer checks in place to ensure only the healthy enter the public parks.
While the decision of the government may entail wisdom which we do not deny after all we have to live with the virus. However, one wonders what is wrong with gymnasiums, sports and other activities. We are seeing England playing West Indies. Sports activities should also pick up in valley. It creates a feel good factor around.
However, having said that it has been observed that there are massive traffic jams on the Boulevard road. It is not uncommon to see bumper to bumper traffic on a route that was built initially only for the fourth gear.
It is amazing that while we have to live with the virus but at the same time it should not lead us to believe that there is a fair going on in the city. Social distancing cannot go for a toss amidst relaxation and unlock. We hope government takes this seriously and enforces the directives of WHO in letter and spirit.
