Traffic Jams

The Srinagar city is witnessing massive unplanned expansion which is triggering a host of problems everywhere. The city is riddled with an abject lack of roads, dismal sewerage drainage system, unreliable electricity, no landscape management and unruly traffic.

The city which had the infrastructure to accommodate a million is now housing around two million souls. Add to that the buffer population of a lakh or two which stays in city for education, treatment and business employment purposes. There is a huge pressure on the current infrastructure available in the city and at most of the time it is found out to be inadequate.

Traffic jams are almost ubiquitous these days. There is a dearth of traffic systematic management system and the manpower required to control the traffic of the growing cosmopolitan city is also inadequate. We were hoping that with the coming of the Jahangir Chowk-Rambagh Flyover the situation may ease out a little but much improvement has happened.

The traffic cops on the various beats appear as clueless as the drivers on the road. There is no one who can own up this mess and deliver good results. One more thing adding to the problem is the VIP traffic movement due to which traffic gets halted at important times in the city leading to further chaos.

Traffic police needs to be given more training about their job-more training refresher courses for them need to be conducted. The general public needs to behave wisely and do not try to bend the rules. Besides, the establishment can take a good lot from the so many educated unemployed youth as freelancers in traffic management. And last but not the least, we need more roads.
