In a mega push to promote eco-tourism in Jammu and Kashmir, government has recently approved the development of new trekking routes in various wildlife protected areas of the union territory. The decision allows online booking of 29 forest rest houses and inspection huts in Kashmir and Jammu divisions; under a common brand and logo. It is a matter of some years that Kashmir would again be on the priority list of all trekkers across Europe. Since the situation is improving in Kashmir it is time for the unemployed youth to take up mountaineering as a full time profession. The new trekking routes which were opened for general tourists are in Bahu Conservation Reserve, Sudhmahadev Conservation Reserve, Thein Wildlife Conservation Reserve, Tral Wildlife Sanctuary-Dachigam National Park-Overa-Aru Wildlife Sanctuary, Thajwas Wildlife Sanctuary, Khrew Wildlife Conservation Reserve-Dachigam National Park-Khonmoh Conservation Reserve, and Khrew Wildlife Conservation Reserve will boost the eco friendly tourism in Jammu and Kashmir. From last few years, the enthusiasm shown by local trekking enthusiasts who are now full time professionals has rejuvenated the trekking tourism in valley. The government can play a proactive role by training more and more youths in this regard as trek guides. There is money, fame, exposure and health to be gained from Trekking tourism.
